Velu supports his sister Kalyani and mother. He thinks the world of his sister. Little does he know she is in love with their neighbour who he knows to be an unsavoury character and in bad company.

Manikkam loves Mythili, who only uses him to fulfil her self-interests. A writer, also named Mythili, learns of Manikkam's sacrifices and his devotion towards his lover, and falls in love with him.

Kalyani is perpetually tortured by her husband Arun. Hence, Arun's father gives his entire property to Kalyani and his grandchild, Velan. An aggravated Arun disowns Kalyani.
